Care Needs to be Taken When Specifying Anchors for Precast / Hollow Core Concrete Decks

Here is a picture that we recently took in the field. Another contractor tried to use a standard anchor to attach heavy x-ray imaging equipment overhead to a precast concrete (hollow core or flexacore) deck. The cone shaped hole immediately told us that the anchor was not appropriate due to the weight of the equipment and the construction methods used to create the concrete deck.

Rooftop Walkway Constructed With Unistrut

This installation features an OSHA compliant rooftop walkway constructed from Unistrut channel and other related materials.  The facility is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the picture shows two buildings with pitched roofs that have been connected with a lower section of flat roof.  Thanks to this section of the roof’s orientation to the sun, and prevailing winds, the flat lower section tends to be shady and subject to ice buildup and drifting snow during winter months.  Building maintenance personnel only have access to one section of the roof from inside the building, but needed access to both sections of the roof to service HVAC equipment.

Unistrut Framing Channel For Medical Support Structures

Unistrut Framing Channel is specified and used for a wide range of medical and hospital applications, including over head X-Ray machine supports for radiology rooms, supports for operating room lights, monitors, service booms and medical gas columns, and CRT monitor supports.  The bolt-together design of Unistrut medical support systems allows for installations to be completed with standard hand tools thereby eliminating the need for special jobsite welding accommodations or the cutting of structural steel.  With this said, it is important to specify and utilize genuine Unistrut framing channel instead of inexpensive knock-off materials of an unknown origin which can fail when subjected to significant load pressures.

This installation shows a rooftop service walk way fabricated from United Interlock Grating part numbers 11282 and 12282.  Rooftop walk ways are often used by building trades to service equipment without damaging the roof’s surface.
